“It’s fascinating to see how fundraising adapts in different countries. You really have to put your assumptions on hold, see how that population thinks, feels and behaves, and find creative new ways to be meaningful within that market.”

Right now I’m focused on

“…a very big project for an overseas medical aid charity to help them identify markets where they could effectively fundraise. I’ve been helping them work out what makes them strong and what markets they would work well in, where they already have a presence to build on.

“I also work regularly with international fundraisers to help them see the wood for the trees. For instance, there’s a team in a southern Mediterranean country who were told to virtually quadruple their targets. They brought me in to see if it was feasible and how they could achieve it. The outcome helped to reinforce their approach and build much stronger relationships within the organisation.”

How I got to THINK

“I emerged from university in the middle of a recession and found myself with two interviews: the NHS and the MS Society. I immediately loved the MS Society, which was like a foundation course in fundraising. I later took my DM skills to MENCAP where I branched out into trusts and corporate.

“By then I’d begun to lean towards international fundraising and also felt strongly about children’s issues. UNICEF was a natural choice and after developing their DM income from £900k to £5 million I moved into an internal consulting role for their European and then worldwide development. Now I’m able to bring all this wonderful experience to THINK’s international clients from our base in Geneva.”
