Simon Burne, Senior Consultant

Simon Burne

“What excites me most is the transformational aspect of consulting for charities… the challenge of soaking up the culture, understanding the dynamics and goals, analyzing, diagnosing and setting about creating real and positive change.”

Right now I’m focused on

“…developing an innovative series of rapid strategy tools for charities to help them achieve the greatest impact with the greatest speed. I’m a big believer in cutting through the clutter and simplifying things as much as possible. For example, our Rule of Four focuses on simplifying all the steps of strategy development down to four elements, enabling a strategy to be completed in just four months, which can bring tremendous results. I’m also excited about a project for a medically based charity where we’re looking at commercial development opportunities for them and creating innovative ways to market their services.”

How I got to THINK

“Somehow, marketing bendy bath-time frogs for Sainsbury’s didn’t do it for me. I volunteered for VSO and ended up working in community development in Papua New Guinea for six years. From there I moved from ‘doing’ to fundraising for a number of humanitarian, children’s and family charities, all causes very close to my heart. After a series of directorships I moved into consultancy where I was able to become more deeply involved in transforming charities and developing ways to help them achieve fast results. As well as being Chair of the Institute of Fundraising for three years, I’ve also enjoyed playing my part in local youth theatre, which keeps me young and exhausted.”

”I’ve always found Simon to be a great source of valuable knowledge and insights which have helped me enormously in my job as Head of Fundraising at the Irish Cancer Society. Not only has he been a great resource for me, he has also been a sounding board and solid resource for members of my team. He has done great work in challenging our thinking and assumptions, yet he’s always fun to have around!”

Head of Fundraising, Irish Cancer Society
