Michelle has senior management experience in both the commercial and not-for-profit sectors. Her early career was spent in high fashion retail, following which she moved into the not for profit sector in 1993.  Her experience in the sector encompasses a wide range of causes spanning heritage, education and mainstream charity. Her roles have included Interim Director of Fundraising at RNID, Director of Visitor Development at the Museum of London, Managing Director of the Museum in Docklands. The early part of her fundraising career was spent at the British Red Cross, where Michelle developed a deep understanding of, and the skills needed to manage, complex stakeholder relationships across a federated structure.  This foundation of her approach to fundraising has proved invaluable in her subsequent international consultancy.

She has been responsible for most of the major fundraising activity streams throughout her career and is adept at developing fundraising strategy at both overall and stream specific level.

As a consultant, Michelle has significant experience in working with both international and UK clients and she thrives on challenge and delivering practical recommendations for implementation.  She has worked on many projects supporting the central bodies of UN agencies and INGOs to develop strategic approaches which can be used by national, in country associations.  This has required winning the hearts and minds of local operations to be supportive of the centrally defined direction.  She is skilled in quickly understanding local cultures and concerns and ensuring these are accounted for in the overarching strategic direction.   She is currently leading the establishment of THINK Canada, offering a range of fundraising support services to both Canadian domestic charities and the Canadian in country associations of INGOs.

She has driven the development of a range of additional services that we now offer to clients to support our consulting work: interim services, research & knowledge and our specialist forums; all of which keep Michelle at the cutting edge of developments in the sector and helps her review all possible options before delivering solutions to clients.

Michelle is passionate about the opportunity for charities to deliver income from commercially premised activities and is skilled in assessing ideas and creating associated business plans.  In addition, she is experienced in the rigour and discipline of securing and stewarding income from statutory sources. Her skills in supporter relations and the all essential ‘back room’ operations of charities also help THINK to deliver comprehensive recommendations recognising that the people who look after the donors are just as important as the people who recruit them.

Michelle is a frequent presenter at fundraising conferences in the UK and internationally.

Objectives and results orientated, Michelle combines strategic thinking skills with operational delivery, applying practical implementation to the creative idea.
